Biographical History

Joan W. Williams Syme (1937- ) is the daughter of James Taylor Williams. She is also the wife of Korean War veteran John Leslie Syme.

Joan W. Williams Syme was born in 1937 in Treasureton, Idaho to parents James Taylor and Julia Annetta Stoffers Williams. After spending a few years in Treasureton, the family briefly relocated to Hamer, Idaho in attempts to dry farm in the region. The family eventually moved to Provo, Utah when Joan's uncle recommended that her father work at the Geneva Steel foundry. In Provo, Joan attended Union School in Lakeview, Utah as well as Timpanogos, Dixon Junior High, and Provo High –where she met her husband John Leslie Syme.

Joan married John in 1956 at the Salt Lake Temple. John left for the Korean War soon thereafter. After he returned, John attempted to go back to school, but later enlisted to serve in the Third Armor Division, which required the couple to relocate to Germany for three years.

After returning, the couple stayed in the Provo region to start a family. In 2016, the couple celebrated their 60th anniversary.
