Biographical History

Dixon J. Markham (1931- ) is and alumnus of Brigham Young University and the son of Provo architect Fred Lewis Markham.

Dixon J. Markham was born on September 8, 1931 to Fred Lewis and Maud Dixon Markham in the Crane Maternity Home in Provo, Utah. Inspired by his father’s accomplishments in architecture, Dixon graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He applied his skills in consulting musicians in designing the acoustics of Latter-day Saint meeting houses. Afterwards, he briefly hired as a faculty member of BYU between 1966-1968, followed by working as a surveyor for the University. He aided in the construction of campus facilities, including the Joseph Smith Building up until 2012.

In regards to his family life, he his wife Junece Jax Markham, and together they had five children. He lost his son, Michael, to stomach cancer at a young age. While in a brief stint in the military, Markham moved his family to Kodiak, Arkansas and Monterrey, California. After their children moved out, Markham and Junece served a mission to North Carolina and Virginia and later traveled to locations, like Southern Arizona and New Zealand, for bird-watching. Their daughter, Mary Ann, served with her husband, President Randal Jule Christiansen, in the Maryland Baltimore mission.
