Biographical History
John Toone (1813-1893) was a pioneer that traveled with the Martin Handcart Company after serving a mission in England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
John Toone was born April 10, 1813, in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England to John Toone and Elizabeth Reading. He received a good education, studing law, medicine, and music. He formed a part of the Queen's Band, and played in other bands and orchestras throughout his life. He married Emma Prosser June 12, 1836. They made their home in Leamington, where they six of their eight children were born and two of them were buried. On April 3, 1849, he was baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was baptised by Cordon Garfield. February 1, 1851, he left England with his family and set sail for America. They arrived March of 1851. On June 7, 1852, they set out for the Salt Lake Valley, they arrived September 27, 1852. On May 8, 1854, John was called on a mission to England, where he served until April 29, 1856, when he returned to America. He crossed the plains in the Martin handcart company that same year. While on his mission he converted a young English school teacher named Hannah Wardle, she became his second wife on February 1, 1857. In 1863 John and some of his family were sent to Lost Creek (later named Croydon) Utah by Brigham Young to help build up the town. On August 31, 1893, he passed away at the age of 80 years.
