Biographical History

Robert Lee Humber, Jr. (1898-1970) was an attorney, businessman, and activist in North Carolina. Robert Lee Humber, Jr was born on May 30, 1898 to Robert Lee Humber, Sr. and Lena Clyde Davis in Greenville, North Carolina. He was married to Lucie Julie Berthier and had three children. He was a graduate of Harvard with a doctorate in the Department of Government, History and Economics and was accepted as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford in January 1920 and graduated in 1923 where he served as a tutor and executive for the Gilcrease Oil Company. He is best known for starting the Movement for World Federation (an organization favoring the creation of a worldwide federal government) in 1940, being the president of the North Carolina Art Commission from 1951-1961 (where he teamed up with the Samuel E. Krees foundation to open up the North Carolina Museum of Art), being a Democratic state senator for Pitt County from 1958-1964, and founding the North Carolina Community College system. Humber died on November 10, 1970 in his home at Greenville, North Carolina.
