Biographical History

John William Coward (1815-1887) was a salt dealer and missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England in the 1850s.

John William Coward was born December 4, 1815 in England. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with the William Morgan Company in 1852 as the Captain of 3rd Ten. Coward was rebaptized in Salt Lake City on October 25, 1852 in the Fifteenth Ward. His wife, Johanna Whitaker Coward (born June 25, 1827), was rebaptized on the same day.

At the end of a mission, he traveled home with the John Hindley Company in 1855 as a Captain of Ten.

The majority of the letter is Coward sharing his beliefs in what is taught by the LDS Church, including his testimony and defense of Joseph Smith. Dated June 5, 1854.
