Biography

Daniel Thomason is a professional viola, violin, and viola d'amore player from California who, along with Gordon Childs and Myron Rosenblum, co-founded the Viola d'Amore Society of America and currently serves as one of its directors.

Daniel Thomason was born in Culver City, California. He studied at Los Angeles State College and received a Master of Music in Viola Performances as well as a DMA in Viola d’Amore from the University of Southern California. Thomason studied violin with Robert Krantz, viola with Sanford Schonbach and Paul Doktor, and viola d’amore with Milton Thomas. He was a member of the Birmingham, Alabama Symphony, the 7th US Army Symphony Orhcesra, the Dallas Symphony and Opera Orchestras, the Roger Wagner Sinfonia, and the Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra. He is currently a member of the Glendale Symphony, the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, and the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra.

Thomason has not only soloed on the viola and viola d’amore in America and Europe but is also an active teacher on those instruments. He has taught music at the Manhattan Beach Schools and the Los Angeles Unified Schools for over 30 years. Thomason has also edited many original period instrument works from the 18th century. Along with Myron Rosenblum and Gordon Childs he formed the Viola d’Amore Society of America in 1977. He has been the co-director of this society ever since.

Scope and Contents This subseries contains musical scores from Daniel Thomason’s personal music library that he gave to Childs. These scores are in the form of printed music, photocopies of original manuscripts and include Thomason’s own arrangements. The collection also contains a piece written for the very first viola congress that Childs performed with Thomason and Myron Rosenblum in June 1982.
