Biographical History

Hans-Karl Piltz (born 1924) is a professional violist/violinist from Germany who has taught and performed around the world.

Hans-Karl Piltz was born in Germany circa 1924 but came to the United States soon after. He studied violin and viola with Miltron Preeves, Nesta Smith, and Eduard Melkus. In Vienna he studied at the Hochschule für Musik. He also studied at a number of different universities in the United States including Emory University, Northwestern University, and De Paul University. Piltz taught chamber music, music history, and violin and viola at the University of British Columbia School of Music since it was founded in 1959. Additionally, he was the conductor of the symphony orchestra there.

Throughout his long music career, Piltz was a member of the Atlanta Symphony, the "L'age d'Or" Baroque Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the CBC Chamber Orchestra, the Vancouver Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, the Nanaimo Orchestra, and the Okanagan Orchestra. He has given concerts all over the world in places that include the United States, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. He has also performed concerts on the CBC radio. Piltz is especially interested in chamber music and baroque music. He has been a Canadian citizen since 1972.
