Biographical History

Veta Josephine Fjeldsted Farnes (1857-1920) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a pioneer, a plural wife, and a nurse in early Utah.

Veta Josephine Fjeldsted was born on August 8, 1857 in Aalborg, Denmark, to parents Christian Daniel and Karen Olsen Fjeldsted. Her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just before she was born, and together they traveled to Utah to be with the Saints. When Josephine was about fifteen years old, her family moved to Logan, Utah, where she and her mother brought hot water to the workmen in the nearby slaughter house, for the purpose of washing up after their day was done. Here she met her future husband. Josephine married Ebenezer Farnes on September 3, 1876, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as his plural (second) wife. Two years later, in 1878, Ebenezer's first wife died, leaving Josephine with her four children to raise along with her own, wich eventually were nine children, totaling thirteen children that she raised. After the family moved to Salt Lake City, Josephine was the only local nurse, and helped many people through sicknesses and baby births. Her last patient was her own father, C. D. Fjeldsted; soon after he died, she had her own medical problems that never allowed her to return to full health. The family moved back to Logan, where Josephine and Ebenezer worked at the temple, largely on Josephine's family line. She died on January 4, 1920, in Logan, Utah.
