Biographical History

David Higgins (1761-1842) was a Protestent minister and one of the incorporators of the Auburn Theological Seminary, and a Revolutionary War soldier.

Rev. David Higgins was born on August 6, 1761, in Haddam, Connecticut, to parents Cornelius and Sarah Hawes Higgins. He married Eunice Gilbert on January 17, 1788. He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, quartering with his wife's parents while in the area. He also stayed with them when he was a student at Yale. On October 6th, 1802, he preached a sermon in Aurelius, New York, that later became a printed book, The Temporal Support of the Gospel Ministry is a Divine Appointment: the Scriptural Proof of Which is Exhibited in a Sermon. In 1812, he recieved a request from the people in Bath, New York, to preach and settle with them. While there, young George Edwards attended his meetings, taking notes of his sermons. In 1835, Higgins moved with his son, Gilbert, to Ohio, where he stayed until his death in 1842.

Collection contains the handwritten notes of George Edwards at Miss Chittenden's School in Bath, New York. He notes his daily lessons, including specific subjects, and the exam scores of himself and a few others. Also included are his notes of the sermons each week at church. Dated February 10th to March 27th, 1828.
