Biographical History

Abigail Middlemass Walker (1842-1931) was a pioneer in southern Utah.

Abigail Middlemass Walker was born at Pope's Harbor near Nova Scotia on February 1, 1842. Growing up on a farm, she enjoyed a childhood full of fun and work. Abigail's family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was about 13 years old.

At age 19 Abigail Middlemass became Abigail Middlemass Walker when she married a young Englishman, Charles Lowell Walker, on September 28, 1861 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Not long after they were married, they were called by President Brigham Young to travel south and settle the region that would become St. George, Utah. This assignment was often known as the "Cotton Mission" or "Dixie Mission." Charles and Abigail left Salt Lake City on November 17, 1862 and arrived in Dixie on December 9, 1862. They spent the rest of their lives in Saint George, Utah.

Abigail was a skilled, industrious woman who served her family and neighbors tirelessly. Even though her husband died in 1904 and left her a widow for 27 years, she was never lonely or idle. She died on April 28, 1931.
