Biography

Carma de Jong Anderson (born 1930) was a scholar at Brigham Young University who donated classically styled clothing to the university.

Carma was born in 1930 to Gerrit de Jong Jr., Brigham Young University College of Fine Arts dean, and Rosabelle Winegar, and she grew up in the Provo, Utah area. Her mother passed away when she was nine. While her father was on the General Board of the Sunday School program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carma and her sisters, Nola and Belle, travelled across the United States. Through these travels, Carma learned about different cultures. In 1951, Carma married Latter-day Saint history scholar Richard Lloyd Anderson. When they were called to teach in the BYU Salzburg Semester abroad, they travelled to Europe and Britain, where Carma was introduced to the artistic and architectural styles of Europe. This opportunity also gave her the chance to visit branches of the Church outside of America.

Carma took classes at Brigham Young University from 1948 to 1992. She graduated with a BA in art and modern languages and was awarded a PhD in historic clothing with a minor in modern languages. She was awarded the Reese Monetary Award. Carma has designed textiles for LDS Historic Sites—crafting clothing and items which resembled items crafted in the time. This also led to her collecting 5,000 pieces of historical clothing, a collection she would later donate to the BYU Fine Arts collection in 2001.
