Biographical History

H. C. White (1848-1925) was an inventor, photographer, and manufacturer from Vermont.

Hawley C. White was born December 25, 1848 in Vermont. In 1870, he began a career grinding spectacle lenses in New York City. Later, in 1874, he moved back to Vermont, and began manufacturing high-quality stereoscopes and optical instruments. He designed machines to automate mass-production of photographic stereo-views. He himself began photographing stereo-views in 1899. He retired in 1915 with the decline in popularity of stereo-views.

White married Maria L. in 1874, and together they had 6 children: Harrie C., Clarence W., Louis Ray, Mable F. Cushman, Marjorie L., and Marion L. He died January 29, 1925 in Bennington, Vermont.

Scope and Contents

Collection includes 437 lantern slides, 148 stereographs, 189 glass plate negatives, one stereoviewer, and one field camera. The lantern slides include images of the First World War; the stereographs show images of locations around the world taken by H.C. White; and the glass negatives contain images of ships and shipyards. Photographs were originally taken between the 1890s and the 1920s.

Dates: approximately 1890-1929
