Matteson; born in1867 in Decorah, Iowa; BS, University of Minnesota, 1888; bank clerk in Decorah and Greant Falls, Montana; became St. Paul agent for the Overman Wheel Company, makers of a popular bicycle; moved to Denver with the Overman Company; by 1899 calling himself an amateur photographer; from 1898 to 1908 Matteson crisscrossed North America taking photogrpahs; photojournalist; moved to Milwaukee in 1909; in 1920 returned to Mexico and climbed Mt. Popocatepetl, stayed too long, developed pulmonary edema, and died in Mexico City)
