Biographical History

William Pinkney (1764-1822) was an American politician and lawyer. He served in Congress and as the U.S. Attorney General.

William Pinkney was born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1764. Pinkney grew up studying medicine and law and in 1788 was elected as a delegate from Maryland to attend the ratification of the United States Constitution. He represented Maryland in Congress first in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate. In 1811, William Pinkney was selected to serve as the U.S. Attorney General under President James Madison from 1811 to 1814. After his tenure with the President, Pinkney continued to serve in political stations. He was the U.S. Minister to Russia from 1815 to 1816 and then later served again as Senator from Maryland. He died in 1822.
