Biography

Joseph Heber Thurber (1858-1948) was an inmate in the Utah Penitentiary (United States Penitentiary) in 1888.

Joseph Heber Thurber was born May 23, 1858, in Spanish Fork, Utah, to Albert King Thurber and Thirza Malvina Berry. He married Laura Ann Keeler on October 27, 1876, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He later lived in Idaho. Thurber was an inmate in the Utah Penitentiary (United States Penitentiary) in 1888. He died on July 26, 1948, in Dingle, Idaho.

Scope and Contents Journal covers the dates November 2, 1886-August 9 1888. The first entry occurs in Greenwich, Utah when Joseph Heber Thurber (1858-1948) was charged with unlawful cohabitation. On December 27, 1886 Joseph Heber Thurber was officially sentenced 4 years in the Utah Penitentiary and a $500 fine for polygamy and an additional 6 months and $200 for unlawful cohabitation. Scope and Contents

Materials include Joseph Heber Thurber (1858-1948) journal detailing his conviction and time served for polygamy and unlawful cohabitation in the Utah Penitentiary. The journal entries are dated November 2, 1886-August 9, 1888. Collection also includes a 16 page biography of Annie C. Christensen Thurber (1866-1944), Joseph's second wife. The biography was typed in March 1939 by Alice K. Hatch, a historian at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.D.U.P.
