biographical statement

Mary Jane Dilworth Hammond (1831-1877) was a woman in Utah.

Mary Jane Dilworth was born on July 29, 1831 in Uwchlan Township, Chester, Pennsylvania to Caleb Dilworth and Eliza Wollerton. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with her family in 1845, and moved west with them to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846. With the departure of the Saints from Nauvoo, the Dilworths travelled with them to Winter Quarters, Nebraska and then on to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1847. In November 1848 she married Francis Asbury Hammond, and they eventually had twelve children.

When her husband was called to serve a mission to Hawaii in 1851, Hammond accompanied him to the islands. There she kept house, taught school, and otherwise assisted the missionaries. She returned to Utah in 1857, and two years later they moved to Ogden. They later moved to Huntsville in 1865, where she served as the Relief Society president. Hammond died on June 6, 1877 in Huntsville.
