Grow, Stewart L. (Stewart Lofgren), 1913-1983
Biography
Stewart L. Grow (1913-1983) was an educator and public servant.
Stewart L. Grow was born on Aug. 31, 1913 in Cardston, Alberta Canada to parents David Henry and Mary Emma Lofgreen Grow. He grew up working on a ranch and enjoyed athletics and politics. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1935 and moved to Washington D.C. where he worked for various government agencies. He served as secretary to Utah Congressman J. Will Robinson, and later as Administrative Assistant to Louisiana U.S. Senator, John H. Overton.
He married Sarah Mabey on July 31, 1941 in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. He continued his work in Washington D.C. until World War II where he was made second lieutenant for the U.S. Army Air Force in Washington D.C. In 1945 he was honorably released with the rank of major.
He received his masters degree from BYU in 1947 and then continued on to do graduate work at George Washington University and the University of Utah. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1954. He moved on to work at Brigham Young University where he taught political science for 32 years before retiring in 1979. He continued to serve within his community in Provo, Utah until his death.
Grow passed away on April 17, 1983 in Provo, Utah where he was also buried.
