James E. Steele (1852-1929) settled Iona, Idaho, and was President of the Iona Mercantile Company. He also served as the first Stake President of the Bingham Idaho Stake.

James E. Steele was born June 22, 1852, to Elizabeth Steele and James Steele. He traveled with his parents to Utah in the Martin Handcart company. He married Elvira Steele in 1881, and later married Hannah Kelley. After living in Utah for a short time, he traveled to Idaho, where he settled Iona, Idaho. He was the President of the Iona Mercantile Company. In 1895, he was called as the first stake president of the Bingham Idaho Stake. Steele died October 18, 1929.

Contains a letter to James E. Steele from Joseph F. Smith, dated March 3, 1902. The letter addresses the United States Congress banning polygamy within the United States and the effect that it would have on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The letter asks that James E. Steele, as the Stake President of the Bingham Idaho Stake, find out the number of polygamous families living within his stake in 1902.
