Charlie Barbour was born in approximately 1851 to Seth and Candice. He had five siblings. He was a former slave to Bob Lumford in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typescript of an interview. Barbour was interviewed by Mary A. Hicks in 1937 as part of the Federal Writer's Project for the Works Progress Administration. The item includes handwritten corrections. Barbour talks about slave dances, "corn shuckin's," and not being able to swim. He remembers the Yankees entering and ransacking the plantation.
