Scope and Contents Handwritten diary. Jackman made the overland journey from Illinois to Utah in 1847 with the first company of Mormon pioneers. He writes about travelling conditions, weather, frequent encounters with Indians, and buffalo hunting. Jackman's company was led by Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church. Scope and Contents Handwritten copy of an article published in the "Good Words and Sunday Magazine" on 1 June 1866 (vol. 7, pp. 380-393). After serving as a gunboat captain in British Columbia, Verney made the overland journey by stage coach from San Francisco, California to New York City in 1865. Collection includes 51 photographs of Salt Lake City, Utah, and carte de visites (some photocopied) and Mormons living in Utah. The shots of Salt Lake are largely of buildings in the downtown area. Some of the visiting cards are of prominent Mormon leaders such as Brigham Young (1801-1877) and Heber C. Kimball. Most of the photographs came from the studios of Savage & Ottinger and George H. Johnson.
