Biography

The Higgs family was established in 1858 when progenitor B.T. Higgs was born and includes his descendants.

Brigham Thomas Higgs, known as B.T. Higgs, was born to Thomas Higgs and Elizabeth Stowe on March 10, 1858, in Salt Lake City, Utah. B.T.’s father, Thomas Higgs, was Brigham Young’s private carpenter. Thomas was born in New York, his parents having immigrated there from England. Thomas taught his son, B.T., carpentry skills, which later enabled B.T. to teach woodworking at Brigham Young Academy for twenty years. He was then appointed as superintendent of custodians and experimented successfully with a system to employ students as janitors. B.T. married Susannah Summers on October 16, 1876, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Susannah was the daughter of Emma Hodges and George Summers, who were also residents of Utah. They had six children, four of which lived to adulthood: Emma Susannah, Brigham Thomas Jr., George Henry, and Delilah. Susannah passed away in 1929, and B.T. married Alice Reed the following year. B.T. passed away on July 12, 1939.
