Administrative History

The Utah Militia (1852-1887), also known as the Nauvoo Legion, was the territorial militia organization for Utah Territory.

Scope and Contents

Contains diaries and notebooks kept by John Steele, including his Mormon Battalion diary, dated 1846-1847, and a Paiute/English language dictionary, dated 1851. Also includes a typescript of Steele's diary that was created in 1961 but includes entries from 1840 to 1877. Also includes some biographical notes on various members of John Steele's family. Dated 1846-1961.

John Steele military service papers, 1868-1903

Scope and Contents

Contains papers related to Steele's service in military, including the Mormon Battalion and Nauvoo Legion in Utah. Includes materials about Steele seeking an increase in his pension for his service in the Mormon Battalion and subsequent injuries suffered there. Also includes several orders that Steele received as Major in the Nauvoo Legion during the Indian Conflict in southern Utah in 1868-1870. These were collected and transcribed by Cathren Steele Riding in 1936.

John Steele personal and family correspondence, 1816-1922

Contains letters to and from John Steele and his family, including his father, John Steele, Sr., his wives and children, including Mahonri Moriancumer Steele, grandchildren, as well as some extended family. Also includes some letters from friends and other personal acquaintances of John and Catherine Steele. Dated 1816-1922.

Abstract

Original handwritten leather bound ledger entitled Ledger of Quarter Master General's Department of G. S. L. City, 1857. Financial records are kept for the Nauvoo Legion, for horses and mules, William H. Kimball, Lewis Robison, George W. Grant, Brigham Young Jr., wheat, oats, and barley threshing. Voting records from 1890 are in the back of the book.

Typescripts (some duplicated). The collection includes autobiographical sketch of William C. McClellan, member of the Mormon Battalion and of the Nauvoo Legion in Utah Valley, Utah, a biographical sketch of his wife, Almeda D. McClellan by Zitelle M. Snarr, and an autobiography of their son David A. McClellan Sr. which includes details of life in the Mormon colonies in Mexico and Arizona.

Philip Margetts music book and Elbert Duncan Thomas postcard

Handwritten entries in a music book. The item contains what seem to be various bugle calls used by "Lt. Phil Margetts" in 1853 probably with the Utah Militia. Also included is a postcard from Elbert Duncan Thomas to Margetts. The item was sent from Japan and wishes Margetts a happy birthday.

Nauvoo Legion quartermaster diary

Scope and Contents

Diary of the Quartermaster's office of the Nauvoo Legion from April 12 to May 28, 1858. At that time the Nauvoo Legion was resisting the entry of "Johnston's Army" of United States government troops into Utah. Each entry records briefly the weather in Salt Lake City, and tells of the dispatching of supplies to various areas and troops. The diary also reports the arrival and departure from Salt Lake City of various important militia and Mormon Church leaders.
