Administrative history

General Church Board of Education (1888-1953) governed the various schools and academies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The General Church Board of Education governed the educational programs of the Church, including seminaries, institutes, and elementary and secondary schools. For institutions of higher education, the board worked in conjunction with the boards of trustees for each of the institutions.

In its infancy, the General Church Board of Education was directed by a Superintendent of Church Schools. The position of Superintendent was eventually changed to Commissioner of Church Education in 1905.
