Biography
The Church of Jesus Christ of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (established 1830) is a restorationist Christian church with a world-wide membership. Originally established in Upstate New York by Joseph Smith, Jr., the church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the past, it was commonly abbreviated as the LDS Church or the Mormon Church.
During the 1820s, the church's founder, Joseph Smith, experienced visions and was led to the golden plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. The Church was officially founded by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830, in Palmyra, New York. The members of the religion faced a series of persecutions, and eventually fled to Utah for refuge beginning in 1847. The Church continued to grow and expand beyond Utah, and with membership later numbering over 16 million. It is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Presidents of the Church have included Joseph Smith Jr. (1832-1844), Brigham Young (1847-1877), John Taylor (1880-1887), Wilford Woodruff (1889-1898), Lorenzo Snow (1898-1901), Joseph F. Smith (1901-1918), Heber J. Grant (1918-1945), George Albert Smith (1945-1951), David O. McKay (1951-1970), Joseph Fielding Smith (1970-1972), Harold B. Lee (1972-1973), Spencer W. Kimball (1973-1985), Ezra Taft Benson (1985-1994), Howard W. Hunter (1994-1995), Gordon B. Hinckley (1995-2008), Thomas S. Monson (2008-2018), and Russell M. Nelson (2018- ).

Abraham Owen Woodruff papers
Diaries and correspondence. The journals were kept when Woodruff was serving on a mission to Germany for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also included is extensive correspondence between Woodruff and other apostles and church leaders. The material also deals with Woodruff's attempt to settle Latter-day Saints in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming. Dated 1895 to 1904.

Wilford Woodruff letter
Typed and signed letter addressed to the Weber Stake of the Mormon Church in Utah. The item gives instructions for the forming of a "Board of Education" and a "Stake Academy" in each stake of the church to provide affordable education that will teach the "principles of salvation."
Wilford Woodruff letter to Susanna Mehetable Rogers Sangiovanni Pickett Keate
Handwritten and signed letter, dated April 22, 1845, addressed to Susannah Sangiovanni. The manuscript accompanied another by Heber C. Kimball (Vault MSS 697). The item gives an intimate look at the feelings and the attitudes of the Mormon leaders during the period after the death of Joseph Smith (1805-1844) and before the Mormons were driven from Nauvoo, Illinois starting in 1846.

This collection, containing letters, a telegram, and a certificate, has been organized into folders chronologically, dating from 1873-1903.
Brigham Young correspondence
Photocopies of a handwritten letter to Brigham Young from Jno. O. Dominis, secretary to King Kamehameha V of Hawaii. Also included is a published copy of the letter in the "Deseret News" and a letter of Brigham Young to the King. Young expresses a desire to purchase land in Hawaii to grow cotton for the Mormons. Dominis, writing for the king, expresses concern that Young's intentions are to do missionary work.

Typewritten copy of a letter dated April 10, 1861 and addressed to Thomas Callister of Fillmore, Utah. Young appoints Callister as bishop of the Fillmore Ward and gives him instruction and advice.

Handwritten and signed letter dated March 15, 1861 and addressed to Dan Jones. The item expresses condolences on Jones' recent bereavement and tells him not to worry about his present financial obligations to the Church.
