The South American Expedition was a scientific research expedition led by faculty members of Brigham Young Academy from 1900 to 1901. The group explored areas in central and southern Mexico and Central America.

Collection includes black and white photographs of Provo, Utah and some photographs of the Cluff Expedition to Mexico. Most of the photographs have a corresponding glass negative or nitrate negative. There are also acetate copy negatives for some photographs. Also includes two prints of paintings by John B. Fairbanks. Dated 1897-1902.

Contains photographs from the Brigham Young Academy South American Expedition from 1900 to 1902. Photographs are portraits of the explorers and photographs of the explorers traveling and setting up camp. Also contains various landscapes and churches visited in countries including Mexico and Columbia, ruins and recovered archeological specimens, and photographs of the indigenous peoples. Also contains scrapbooks of similar photographs.

Contains handwritten journals, typescripts of journals, handwritten and typewritten correspondence to, from and concerning Van Buren and the expedition, supply lists, financial papers, certificates, passports, maps and photographs concerning the expedition. The majority of the material dates from 1900-1903.
