Biography
SOCOTWA was a nonprofit river rafting group founded in the late 1940s in Murray, Utah.
SOCOTWA was a nonprofit group founded in the late 1940s in Murray, Utah. Its name stands for the "South Cottonwood Ward" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though it was unaffiliated with the church. The organization began as a river rafting operator with a warehouse paid for by members, organizing rafting trips in Glen Canyon, Utah. The organization eventually grew to own trucks, buses, and rafts, and expanded to host trips on other rivers. In the 1950s, it had over 1,000 members and had an office in Salt Lake City. It eventually expanded to organize various types of trips, including river excursions, local social events, and reunions. The organization ran a newsletter and was governed by a board. It was active until at least 2010.
