Biography
Parsons School of Design was founded by William Merritt Chase, an American Impressionist, in 1896. Frank Alvah Parsons joined the school as an art educator in 1904. In 1910, Parsons became the sole director. Parsons introduced the fashion design program in 1904, the interior design program in 1906, and the graphic design program in 1910. The school adopted Parsons' name in 1941 due to his impact on the field of design. In 1921, Parsons initiated a satelite school in Paris, France. In 1970, Parsons joined The New School, an institution founded in 1919 by a group of progressive scholars. The New School merger provided Parsons with additional resources and expanded their academic offerings.
