Biography

American Inns of Court (established 1980) is an association of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals in the United States.

The American Inns of Court is an association of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals established in 1980. The association aims to be non-partisan and to foster mentoring relationships, conversations about legal issues, and advance ethics and civility. Rex E. Lee, then Dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and Dallin H. Oaks, then president of BYU, were asked by Warren E. Burger, then Chief Justice of the United States, to test the association at BYU. Senior U.S. District Court Judge A. Sherman Christensen made the idea workable, and the first American Inn of Court was founded February 2, 1980, in Utah. In 1985, the American Inns of Court Foundation was organized to support the Inns.
