Administrative History

Brigham Young University--Hawaii (est. 2003) is a private religious university in Laie, Hawaii. The school was previously administered by Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah), and known as its Hawaii Campus.

Brigham Young University--Hawaii became independent of Brigham Young University in May 2003. At that time, the university was organized into a College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Computing, and School of Education. This structure was reorganized in 2008, with a College of Business, Computing and Government; a College of Human Development; a College of Language, Culture and Arts; and College of Math and Sciences. At the end of the 2016-2017 year, the school discontinued inter-collegiate athletics in support of its academic mission.

In 2018, the university was again reorganized. Academic departments were dissolved, and the colleges replaced with a series of discipline-based faculties led by a dean. These include the Faculty of Arts and Letters; Faculty of Business and Government; Faculty of Culture, Language, and Performing Arts; Faculty of Education and Social Work; Faculty of Math and Computing; Faculty of Religious Education; and Faculty of Sciences.

Presidents of Brigham Young University--Hawaii have included Eric B. Shumway (2003-2007); Steven C. Wheelwright (2007-2015); and John S. Tanner (2015- ).
