 Organization

Biography

The Explorer Scout Post 36 is a scout troop whose members were involved in a tragic accident in Southern Utah in 1963.

The Explorer Scout Post 36 is a division of the Boys Scouts of America that functions under the organization of the Pleasant View 3rd Ward (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) located in Provo, Utah. On June 10, 1963, some of the members of the scout troop, along with adult leaders and some additional passengers, were riding in the bed of an open pickup truck in a remote part of Southern Utah when the truck began to ascend a steep hill at an 8 percent grade. The truck stalled and consequently overturned, killing seven Boy Scouts from Provo Explorer Post 36 and six adults. Twenty-six others were injured and only ten escaped unharmed.

Thirty years later, the surviving members of Explorer Scout Post 36 raised funds and erected a monument to those who lost their lives next to the spot the accident occurred. The memorial was dedicated on June 10, 1993.

The Explorer Scout Post 36 continues to operate under the jurisdiction of the Pleasant View 3rd Ward in Provo, Utah.
