Register of the Provo Bench Canal and Irrigation Company records, 1999 (organized by homesteaders on Provo Bench; est. Jan. 17, 1853 with charter from territorial legislature; act authorized company to divert one-half of waters of Provo River near mouth of canyon on north side of stream; first irrigation corporation organized Utah; canal completed in 1863, only two-and-a-half-feet deep and about six-feet wide, but provided sufficient water; cultivation and crop production increased with population and soon more water was needed; June 1865, landowners petitioned for more water from the Provo River, the petition was granted; reincorporated as the Provo Bench Canal and Irrigation Company and established the Provo Bench Irrigation District (the area served by the canal); constructed new canal to carry the increased allocation of water, three feet deep and seven feet wide with one-third slope on each bank; company reached agreement with North Union Irrigation Company to provide water from the canal for distribution by the latter company; North Union Irrigation Company's canal separated from the Provo Bench Company's about one and a half miles from its source and ran towards the towns of Pleasant Grove and Lehi)
