Biography
E. & H.T. Anthony & Company was a supplier and distributer of photography supplies in the United States during the 19th century.
The E. & H.T. Anthony & Company was founded by Edward Anthony and his brother Henry T. Anthony. It began with a shop producing daguerreotype cases, camera boxes, and photo chemicals. By 1854, the company had become the largest manufacturer and distributor of photography apparatus and material in the world. The operation expanded to include stereoscopic view cards, photographic albums, gallery furniture, and backdrops. From 1870-1902, the company published a monthly serial called Anthony's Photographic Bulletin. During the 1890s, the company developed and produced two consumer cameras, one, the Buckeye, was a camera-box, and the other, the Marlborough, was a bellows-box type. The E & H.T. Anthony & Company was formally changed in 1862 and reorganized as a corporation in 1877. In 1883, the company produced the first hand instantaneous camera to be commercially manufactured, called the Schmidt Patent Detective Camera. The company was the corporate predecessor of the Ansco Company which would merge to become Agfa, one of the best known photo companies of the 21st century.
