Scope and Contents

General laws promulgated from the Hague on 25 and 26 November 1616 relating to the entire United Provinces recently separated from the crown of Spain. The laws cover a wide variety of subjects including the right of lords Herman and Balthazar van Ripperda to maintain jurisdiction over the town and area of Delfzijl. Many of the materials relate to dike administration, water control, and control of sluices.

The manuscripts include official correspondence and letters as well as published political pamphlets, decrees, and broadsides. They cover the years 1526 to 1761 with most of the materials in two volumes dated within the 1660s. The issues treated are largely governmental, diplomatic, and political both on the national level and within the province of Zeeland but also include such materials as contracts of the Dutch East India Company...
