Administrative History

The Normal Department (1879-1890) was an instructional unit at Brigham Young Academy.

The Normal Department at Brigham Young Academy was established in 1879. While a normal (teacher instruction) course had been offered previously, under the department the curriculum was expanded to include a series of preparatory, advanced, and finishing courses. During the 1880 school year, a practical course was added to the course list, and by 1885 the program included two full academic years. Through the efforts of the department, the Academy became the most important teacher training institution among the academies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1890, the Church recognized the program by designating it as the Latter-day Saints Normal Training College. Under the new college, tuition for a select group of students was to be waived. While the program remained successful, the college was administratively merged into the Collegiate Department in 1897.
