Biography
The Swiss and German Mission (1868-1898, 1904-1938) was a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first mission presidents were President Joseph S. Horne in 1868 and President Hugh Jenne Cannon in 1904.
The Swiss, Italian, and German Mission was renamed to the Swiss and German Mission on January 1 1868 with President Joseph S. Horne as its first mission president until he was replaced by President Karl G. Maeser in June of that year. The mission was divided into the Swiss and German Missions on January 1st 1898 with President Peter Loutensock as the final president of the combined mission. However, the missions were recombined on May 22nd 1904 and Hugh Jenne Cannon, who was the German mission president at the time, became president of the new Swiss and German Mission. 1925 saw the Swiss and German Mission split into the Swiss and German and German-Austrian missions. Then on January 1st 1938 the Swiss and German mission was split. One part became the West German Mission, one part combined with the Austrian part of the German-Austrian Mission to make the Swiss-Austrian Mission, and the German part of the German-Austrian Mission became the East German Mission. The final mission president of the Swiss and German Mission was President Thomas E. Mckay who became the president of the Swiss-Austrian Mission. Another Swiss and German mission president, Philemon M Kelly, was preemptively released in August of 1937 in preparation to become the president of the West German Mission.
