Biography

The Democratic Party (Utah) (1890-present) is a political party organized in the state of Utah.

The Democratic Party (Utah) emerged after the 1890 manifesto on polygamy. The emergence of the Democratic Party ended the state's local parties (that largely followed religious affiliations), marking the point at which Utah politics began to reflect national trends. The Democratic Party in Utah enjoyed much success until the first decade of the 20th Century, when Republican senator Reed Smoot rose to power and influenced Utah's politics, especially due to his ties with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Scope and Contents

Collection includes photographs of people and places in Utah around the turn of the century. Locations depicted include Salt Lake City and Mercur, Utah, while many of the images include members of the Bush family. Also includes safety film copy negatives of some of the photographs. Dated approximately 1890-1929.
