Administrative History

The Summer School (1941-1973) was an administrative unit at Brigham Young University. The division was responsible for managing the summer academic program at the university.

Summer courses were initially offered at Brigham Young University beginning in the Cluff Administration (1892-1903), and expanded with the establishment of the Alpine Summer School in 1922. However, the Summer School was not formally established under this name as a university division until 1941. Administered by a dean or director, the Summer School coordinated and administered the academic program on campus and at the Aspen Grove. The unit was discontinued by 1973, with academic programs integrated into the overall university schedule.

Deans and directors of the Summer School included Asael C. Lambert (dean, 1941-1951), Ariel S. Ballif (acting dean, 1952-1956; director, 1957-1958), Howard T. Reid (acting director, 1955-1958), Dean A. Peterson (director, 1959-1963), Keith R. Oakes (director, 1964-1967), Dean A. Peterson (director, 1968-1972).
