Biography
The Mobile and Northwestern Railroad Company was chartered in 1870. In 1887 the name was changed to Mobile, Hattiesburg and Jackson Railroad Company; and in 1890 to Mobile, Jackson and Kansas City Railroad Company. The Ripley Railroad Company was chartered in 1871. In 1872 the name was changed to Ship Island, Ripley and Kentucky Railroad Company; and in 1890 to Gulf and Chicago Railroad Company. In 1903 when control was purchased by the Mobile, Jackson and Kansas City Railroad Company, the name was changed to Gulf and Chicago Railway Company. In 1909 the Gulf and Chicago Railway Company and the Mobile, Jackson and Kansas City Railroad Company were merged to form the New Orleans, Mobile and Chicago Railroad Company. In 1917 this company was reorganized as the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad Company, which in 1940 merged with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company (chartered 1848) to form the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company. The Illinois Central Railroad Company was formed in 1851. In 1913 it acquired control of the Chicago, Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company, merging with that company in 1963. In 1971 the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company and the Illinois Central Railroad Company merged to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad Company.
