American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions

 Organization

Administrative History

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1810-1961) was the first American Christian missionary organization.

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. The objective of the ABCFM was to spread Christianity worldwide. While it originated as a Congregationalist organization, the ABCFM also accepted missionaries from Presbyterian (1812–1870), Dutch-Reformed (1819–1857) and other denominations. They were a voice against Indian removal, and served many missions in North America among the Indians that had been displaced. As early as 1829, the Board had sent representatives to China. In 1961, the ABCFM or the American Board, as it was often called, merged with other societies to form the United Church Board for World Ministries, an agency of the United Church of Christ.
