Administrative History
The Circuit Court of Hancock County, Illinois was first established in 1832 and is the ninth judicial Circuit Court in Illinois.
The Hancock County Circuit Court was named for John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was first established in 1832, seven years after Illinois became a state. The first county courthouse was at Montebello, on the banks of the Mississippi River, but was not occupied for long. In 1833, Carthage became the county seat and the first courthouse for Hancock County Circuit Court was built in Carthage, Illinois.

Handwritten summons dated March 17, 1843, to Edward Johnson to appear to answer a complaint from Ashael Palmer regarding failure to pay a debt. The document is signed by Robert D. Foster, Justice of the Peace.
Hancock County, Illinois Court appeal bond
Handwritten and printed appeal bond. The item records the obligation of the plaintiff, John Boyuton, to pay defendant Jabez A. Bebe the sum of fifteen dollars. The document claims to be taken from a judgement rendered by justice of the peace Abraham Lincoln and was approved by court clerk Jacob Cunningham Davis.
Smith family legal instruments
Handwritten and printed legal instruments relating to Emma Hale Smith (1804-1879), wife of the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith (1805-1844). One of the items deals with the payment of taxes owed on certain properties in the county. The other item is a statement of guardianship and real estate inheritances relating to the children of Emma Smith and signed by her.
